Somar Wrestling is a progression of a mindset that started back in 2002 when coach Richard Ramos began his coaching career. He wanted to instill core values in his athletes that would translate into all aspects of their lives. These values would be the foundation for those wrestlers who were SOMAR TRAINED. Values that would push them to exceed what others expected and become something that would transcend what anyone thought was possible.
After 12 years of coaching, Ramos decided to apply the values of being SOMAR TRAINED into the idea of making wrestling affordable, progressive and fun while striving to assist as many families as possible in getting their daughters into wrestling in college. He was tired of hearing others complain about limited access and events for females, how tournaments were being run, how expensive the sport was becoming, with little action to facilitate change. So he reached out to others in the wrestling community who he had networked with to develop an annual girls only camp with Olympian and ONLY female head coach in college wrestling Toccara Montgomery.
Later, Ramos would seek advice and guidance from other coaches and mentors to create groundbreaking events such as Girls ONLY College Combines, Takedown Tournament Series, Takedown Tournament Draft Duals, and an addition of the Shootout events that feature high level senior athletes in takedown matches.
